Hook, line and sinker

Test cricket's spin wizard Shane Warne says the Australian side threw out the bait to see what South African cricket captain Graeme Smith would do - and he swallowed it hook, line and sinker!

Referring to the war of words between the two of them in the media, Warne likened it to catching fish: "It's like when you want to catch a big fish. You throw out the bait and wait. We did not have to wait long for him to shoot his mouth off, but the problem was that his reaction also influenced his team.

Speaking at a Hospice dinner in Johannesburg, Warne said South Africa had to decide what kind of captain they wanted.

"When necessary, a captain has to be able to kick a team-mate in the behind or put his arm round someone and say "you're a valuable member of the team - come and show everyone what you can do."
